When it comes to sports, celebrity tattoos seem to just go hand in hand with just about any sport you can name. Basketball has certainly had its share of players who love their tattoos. Recently Oklahoma City Thunder player Kevin Durant has decided to tweet about his latest tattoo, to commemorate the National Basketball Association’s recent lockout. It turns out that Durant is no stranger to tattoos, having shared via twitter a massive tattoo he had done while whiling away some time during the lockout that left players eager for some kind of past-time while waiting for the owners and players to work out a deal.

The back tattoo he shared with everyone shows the words “Maryland” across the top with an angel below holding a basketball. The hands on either side are displaying on the left three fingers and on the right five fingers to represent his number “35” on the court.

Although as of today’s writing all we have heard is that he plans to get a tattoo on his ribs saying “survived the NBA lockout 2011” there is not yet any word of his having gone ahead with the tattoo, or even if the tentative agreement will hold to have players back on the court by Christmas Day. Just another celebrity tattoo, you may say, but one that for Kevin will be a piece of history.

Not long ago, Carl Zimmer, who writes a blog for Discover Magazine called The Loom, wrote about his recent discovery of several tattoos on the bodies of some friends of his who happened to be scientists. The first discovery was by accident, the second and third came about from curiosity and he finally asked his readers if this was an anomaly or were there more scientists out there with tattoos related to their love of science? He was surprised by the flood of responses he received.

The first tattoo he spotted was on Professor Sandeep Robert Datta who is a neurobiologist at Harvard. Yes, that Harvard. He has a DNA coiled around his arm and not just any DNA, but one that spells out his wife’s initials. I won’t get into the intricate background of how this is accomplished; just trust me that it all make sense to anyone who is geek enough to understand it. And you would probably have to be a geek to even want to get into how it was done. But the tattoo, shown here, is pretty cool looking.

And then there is Marcus Davis, a developmental biologist at the University of Chicago who is studying the genetic instructions stored in the fins of fish to understand better how they came to develop into things like hands and fingers. He just happens to have the tattoo of a eusthenopteron on his arm, a very old species of fish that was one of those early guys that crawled up on land. The kind you see in all the cartoons about evolution.

Science Ink by Carl ZimmerIt turns out that many scientists have etched on their bodies symbols of the passion that rules their lives, the science that draws them out and makes their curiosity a tool to change the world around us. The end result of his conversations with all of these scientists is a wonderful book, which if you are the kind of person, who is curious about science and tattoos, might be just the thing for you. I know that I am just enough of a geek to love a book like this. Here are a few more pictures from the book, called Science Ink, which you may have you wanting more.

tattoo celebrities, Tattoo designs, tattoo artistsIf you live in the state of California your kids cannot get a tattoo before they are 18, even if the parent gives his or her approval. But for Blink-182 drummer Travis Barker that doesn’t really matter. That is because the musician, known for having a few tattoos of his own, says that if his kids want a tattoo and they are at least 16, he would let them. Of course, he would let them with a few rules attached to that statement.

One of the main things he says he would require is that they must clear the tattoo design with him first. He may seem to have a laid-back attitude about his kids, which include his stepdaughter Atiana Cecilia who is 12 and his two kids of his own Landon Asher who is 8 and the youngest (for now) child Alabama Luelle who at 5 is probably not getting a tattoo any time soon. But he says he is pretty clear about the rules and the kids know they would have to clear any tattoo designs they wanted with him first.

“It can’t be a tramp stamp” says the Dad when talking about his kids and the tattoos they might be getting, “It can’t be something in bad taste.” I guess that would have to be clarified when the time comes, but he says that if the tattoo design is done in good taste and by one of the better tattoo artists he would be good with it once they are sixteen.

So what about your kids? Do you have rules with your kids about what age they can have a tattoo design done? How about the decision to choose which tattoo artists they want to have design it? How much control can a parent have about something as personal as a tattoo design on their kids?

Cheryl Cole has said she wants to get a full back tattoo. The singer known for the hit “Fight for Love” has several tattoos already. Last count was seven, as far as I can see. But she has been known to say that if she could get up the nerve to do it, she would love to have a full tattoo on her entire back.

She admits that they are addictive and even though her friends have asked her to really think about this, she is adamant that a full back tattoo is something she sees in her future. She says that people she have what they want and that she considers tattoos art. “What’s beautiful is being you” says the star.

Well I for one think she should either do the deed or stop talking about it. Plenty of other starts have had full back tattoos, what is stopping her from getting one? If she doesn’t think she can sit that long for one, she can do it in stages, plenty of people do. I think she is just making noise, but doesn’t have what it takes to go beyond those little cutie ones she has so far.

So – what is your take on all this noise about Cheryl getting a new big tattoo? Just noise? Gearing up? Not enough publicity lately? Until then, here is a little mini-gallery of a few she already has.

barbie-tokidoki tattooWell I guess it was just a matter of time, but I am shocked I tell you. Shocked! The latest collectable Barbie to come out has pink hair, a mini skirt and tattoos on her shoulder, back and neck! What is the world coming to when staid old Barbie, that retro to the world of Jackie O has tattoos?

Obviously this is not your run of the mill Barbie that your kid can go out and get at Toys R Us. There have for a long time been collector versions of Barbie, many put out by fashion houses and high end designers. Bob Mackie has been releasing specialty dolls for years. And that is where this particular tattoo Barbie (I never thought I would say those two words together) has come from. The “tokidoki Barbie” is the creation of the Italian-based Japanese-inspired fashion house of the same name.

These may be just intended as a collectable doll to sit in a box on a shelf, but I for one would find it a hoot to find one in my stocking this Christmas (hint, hint). She really is a cutie, and the little dog that comes with her in a cactus coat is too much!  Although finding a way to put that little gal in my stocking may just be expensive to do, since the $50 dolls are all sold out on the main collector site called Barbie Collector and I saw a few listed on eBay for around $700. So I guess she is already beyond my reach.

Sigh! But a tattoo Barbie! You have to admit that never in your wildest dreams could any of us thought this one up! Truly the tattoo has come of age when the doll that has it all, now has tattoos.

Zombie Boy is the Sexy Rick Genest

Posted by: | Comments (0)

If you saw Lady Gaga’s video “Born This Way” you couldn’t miss the amazing body and tattoo of Rick Genest, better known as “Zombie Boy” in the video world. It is kinda funny that someone could be so well known for his tattoos that it is hard to even imagine him without the facial tattoos that have made him so famous.

There have always been tattoo boys throughout history, often they got work in a circus or place like a circus to show off their tattoos. In many ways, it is almost a tradition to have someone in every era that is considered “the tattoo boy” of his time. I guess we could say that Rick is The Tattooed Man for our time. And instead of a circus, it’s the world of music video that has become the platform to show that off. But then, there are some that say that rock videos are like a circus, so it may just be the perfect place for the 21st Century Tattooed Man.

Personally, I could sit all day and check out the gorgeous tats that this man has covering every inch of his lovely body. I mean, when you do for a living what this guy does, you have to be in great shape. Because when the tattoos are out in all their glory there is nowhere to hide the body. You know they would not look as good if he wasn’t in such obviously great shape.

And for those who always kinda wondered what the guy looks like without the tattoos on his face, German style magazine Schon has done us the favor of using makeup to show us. I always thought he probably had to have great bones to pull off this amazing look, but who knew?

So enjoy my friends – because Zombie Boy or Rick Genest is still hot!
